what I actually wanted to say…

As a singer-songwriter, the most obvious means of connecting with my audience are my songs. I’ve talked before about authenticity and how folk music audiences want to get to know their artists. Folk musicians use their songs as a vehicle to convey to others all kinds of experiences, perceptions and feelings. Music could be seen as my brain’s way of describing the world, therefore the songs are the direct way of connecting to the audience and telling them ‘hey, that’s what I think the world is like’ (and also: ‘do you feel the same? does your perception/depiction of the world fit my description?’) Pete Seeger accredits music’s great power to move us to the way medium and meaning combine in song and the way form and structure underline and emphasise an emotional message(cited in Levitin, 2008).
